(Indiana)
Indiana is located in central America. From the early days of wilderness explorers to the present, it has always served as a corridor for the south-north and east-west transportation, which earned it the name of “the crossroads of America”. In the old days, French businessmen took Indiana as the link between Canada and Louisiana, which was also the reason why they built the settlement of Vincennes. The British saw Indiana's strategic importance, and took over the state in 1763. After the American Revolution, and the War of 1812, new residents continued moving into this land and by 1816 when Indiana gained statehood, 60,000 people had settled here. The Underground Railroad, which flourished throughout the state, provided the opportunity for runaway slaves to escape to freedom in Canada up until the Civil War.
Today, Indiana is still taken as the Crossroads of America. Its capital city, Indianapolis, is the junction of interstate highways, and is used as the base for many American trucking lines. Combined with the state's manufacturing and industrial capabilities, Indiana's transportation systems continue to keep America on the move.
