(Maine)
Maine is located in the northeast of the country. The high latitude makes it very cold during the winter but an ideal place for visiting in the summer. Up to 90% of Maine is covered by woods and its coast is a combination of magnificent rocky coastline of the north, and long sandy beaches of the south.
Maine isn't just about beautiful scenery and wilderness. Its history and economy have a strong link with the vast timber reserves and the Atlantic Ocean. Thanks to the abundance of timber as well as the unique location, Maine became a shipbuilding center in colonial times. The first ship built and launched in western hemisphere was in Virginia in 1607. Shipbuilding continued to flourish in Maine and the first atomic submarine, the Swordfish, was built in Maine. Today, Maine continues to lead the industry and produces more canoes than any other state in the union.
Except for shipbuilding, Maine is also an agricultural state and its blueberry harvest is the largest in the nation. Due to the cool weather in the north, potatoes grow well in the state and are also a major product of Maine.
The state is famous for delicious shellfish as well, especially clams and the famous Maine lobster. Maine's yearly lobster catch is larger than any other state.
One of the world's great estuaries, Chesapeake Bay, divides Maryland into two parts. The bay is navigable, and offers a rich habitat for abundant populations of fish and wildlife. The bay and its harbors provide the right environment for migratory waterfowl, and for harvesting crabs, oysters, and clams.
During the War of 1812, Fort McHenry, sentinel of Baltimore's harbor, was bombarded with artillery, including rockets, and on September 13, 1814, Francis Scott Key was so inspired as he watched the attack that he wrote the "Star-Spangled Banner" in praise of the successful defense of the fort.
